Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) scanners are evolving medical imaging devices like MRI and CT. MPI promises high spatial resolution images and it has minimum scanning time. NDMI has developed an MPI scanner prototype with a minimum bore size. NDMI is currently working on the upgradation of MPI scanners to increase bore size for wider applications.

Smart magnetic nanoparticles have significant applications from imaging to therapeutic. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are very familiar to use as contrast agents for Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The invention of magnetic particle imaging (MPI) in 2005, explored a new domain of magnetic nanoparticles as tracer agents.

Magnetic Particle Relaxometer (MPR) developed by the Nexus Defence and Medical Technologies (NDMI) at 9.9 kHz is used to characterize magnetic nanoparticles synthesized and developed by NDMI. Key parameters such as full width at half of the point spread function (PSF), effective relation time, and 3rd/5th harmonic ratio of the potential tracer agents for magnetic particle imaging (MPI) are evaluated
